Wall textures vary by region and age of your structure.

Most texture is fine - Orange Peel and Knockdown textures are the most common, and don’t normally have enough depth to interfere with Slate-ish laying flat on your wall surface.

Some textures, like the Slap Brush style, may have peaks that prevent the tile from laying flat. Often these can be removed by knocking them off with a trowel or other flat tool.

Hand-applied finishes (like plaster, or stucco-type applications), may create a surface that is not flat - that is it may create subtle high or low spots that make proper adhesion an issue. You can check for flatness by holding up a yardstick, longer level, or other straight item to check for flatness.
